Day 6: Notes on the WordPress Classic Editor plugin

Classic Editor plugin page on the WordPress repository, including description and screenshot of the editor interface.

For WordPress users who haven’t transitioned to the Block Editor, there have been ongoing conversations about how long the Classic Editor plugin will be supported.

Except, that’s not the issue.

There’s a misunderstanding about the Classic Editor plugin and the Classic Editor.

As Joe Dolson explains in Notes on the Classic Editor plugin, the Classic Editor is part of WordPress core.

The Classic Editor plugin doesn’t contain the editor.

Rather it provides controls for users to switch between the Classic Editor and the Block Editor.

You can use the Classic Editor, without installing the Classic Editor plugin, by adding one line of code.

The question should be “How long will WordPress continue to contain the Classic Editor?” not “How long will the Classic Editor plugin be supported?”
